Around 30% of adults globally suffer from steatotic liver disease, commonly known as fatty liver, a potentially life-threatening condition linked to unhealthy diets and lifestyles.
Few people exhibit visible symptoms in the disease&rsquo;s initial stages. Early screening can make a big difference, enabling timely treatment and lifestyle changes.
Eieling Technology has developed a palm-sized diagnostic tool, Liverscan, that costs about half as much as conventional methods and is quicker and easier to use, lowering the barriers to mass testing.
Increasing numbers of hospitals and clinics &ndash; <a href="https://hkmb.hktdc.com/en/nE1gXE0c/article/hong-kong-medtech-innovator-expands-across-the-world" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">mainly in the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macao so far</a> &ndash; are using this groundbreaking device.
The medtech firm has subsequently introduced its handheld scanner in ASEAN and Egypt, reflecting demand for an affordable, non-specialist option in low- and middle-income countries. &nbsp;
Liverscan made its overseas debut in April 2025 in Vietnam, where the scanner has been installed in hospitals and clinics in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.
Eieling secured its foothold in its first overseas market with the support of the Ho Chi Minh City office of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which arranged meetings with healthcare product distributors and provided detailed market information.
Paving the way for widespread adoption around the world, Liverscan has also been approved for use in China and the US.
Executives expect to secure the green light from European Union regulators soon and are engaging with authorities in India and Pakistan.
Distribution discussions are underway in 30 markets.
&ldquo;We anticipate a surge in Liverscan&rsquo;s overseas revenue in 2026,&rdquo; Eieling Technology&rsquo;s Global Product Lead, Ginger Jiang, says.
As personal health monitoring becomes more common, the liver health specialist is expanding into the consumer market.
In May 2025, it unveiled FattaLab, a lightweight medical-grade device that can be used at home as well as in clinics and community centres.
The new product is already on sale in Hong Kong and Macao, with approvals for major overseas markets anticipated this year.
&ldquo;We hope that FattaLab will one day appear on our bedside tables, just like thermometers and blood pressure monitors, becoming a gateway to home health management,&rdquo; Ms Jiang remarks.
Eieling Technology presented FattaLab and Liverscan at the <a href="https://hkmb.hktdc.com/en/aolNP8Lx/article/summit-strives-for-healthy,-inclusive-future" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Asia Summit on Global Health</a>, a health innovation and investment platform co-organised by the Hong Kong SAR Government and the HKTDC, as well as the concurrent <a href="https://www.hktdc.com/event/hkmedicalfair/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair</a>.
Both events took place at the same time as FattaLab&rsquo;s official launch.
Participating in these events has enabled the company to ramp up its business expansion and engineering breakthroughs.
These and other HKTDC-led events, such as next-gen tech fair <a href="https://www.hktdc.com/event/innoex/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">InnoEX</a>, have helped it link up with multiple partners from around the world, including buyers, distributors, investors and research institutions, Ms Jiang explains.
&ldquo;The HKTDC helps Eieling Technology overcome geographical limitations, deepen technological cooperation and capture growth opportunities.&rdquo;
In January this year, the innovator presented FattaLab at CES in Las Vegas, as part of the Hong Kong Tech Pavilion organised by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the HKTDC.
FattaLab won a prestigious Innovation Award at the tech fair.
The HKTDC has also provided wide-ranging support for Eieling Technology&rsquo;s ongoing growth trajectory through its network of overseas offices as well as business development support programmes, such as <a href="https://www.go-gba.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">GoGBA.</a>
We helped them foster partnerships and identify new possibilities in high-growth medtech markets, including the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, ASEAN, the Middle East and US.
During GITEX Global in Dubai in October last year, for example, the HKTDC&rsquo;s local office facilitated key introductions with stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem, including government authorities, medical equipment traders and hospitals, opening doors to future expansion in the United Arab Emirates.
The HKTDC-organised business matching, media interviews and networking events provide a solid foundation for entry into new markets, Ms Jiang notes.
The company spun out of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2018, led by Prof Zheng Yongping, a biomedical engineer and Director of the university&rsquo;s Research Institute for Smart Ageing.

Hong Kong&rsquo;s latest Budget, unveiled yesterday by Financial Secretary Paul Chan, included a variety of measures to bolster the city&rsquo;s position as an international centre for finance, innovation and technology (I&amp;T) and trade, among other areas, while helping businesses capture new opportunities arising from China&rsquo;s 15th Five-Year Plan.
Mr Chan highlighted how Hong Kong, with its large talent pool, can help enterprises open up new markets by leveraging the city&rsquo;s global ties and close connectivity with the Chinese Mainland.
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) welcomed the Budget, which also included plans to formulate Hong Kong&rsquo;s first five-year plan.
The BUD Fund, a dedicated resource to help Hong Kong-based businesses expand into new markets, will also receive an additional HK$200 million (~US$26 million).
&ldquo;These initiatives demonstrate the HKSAR Government&rsquo;s commitment to supporting Hong Kong SMEs and facilitating economic transformation and high-quality development,&rdquo; said HKTDC Chairman Prof Frederick Ma.
The HKTDC will actively align with the government&rsquo;s policy direction, implement the national Five-Year Plan and help Hong Kong to consolidate and enhance its status as an international hub, Prof Ma added.
The Council will also extend its global business network, including deeper ties with ASEAN and the Middle East while exploring more emerging markets, to further enhance Hong Kong&rsquo;s pivotal role in China&rsquo;s Belt and Road Initiative.
&ldquo;As a superconnector and super value-adder, Hong Kong enjoys the unique edge of linking the mainland and global markets,&rdquo; Prof Ma noted.
&ldquo;We successfully bring in international capital, technology, talents and advanced management expertise, helping mainland and local enterprises upgrade and innovate, while supporting mainland companies to go global via Hong Kong&rsquo;s professional services platform.&rdquo;
The HKTDC will also further leverage its network of 51 offices worldwide, as a member of the GoGlobal Task Force &ndash; a new initiative to help mainland enterprises to expand overseas &ndash; to help businesses explore global markets, diversify risks and grow.
At the same time, Hong Kong enterprises, especially SMEs, will continue to benefit from value-added services from HKTDC to help these firms enhance their competitiveness, upgrade their digital operations and capitalise on e-commerce opportunities.
<h3>Stronger ecosystems for innovation, finance</h3>
The Council will also align with a range of measures set out in the Budget to promote Hong Kong&rsquo;s development as an international I&amp;T hub through its exhibitions, conferences and events.
These platforms will help showcase Hong Kong&rsquo;s strengths and ecosystem advantages in I&amp;T as well as IP, while fostering cross‑industry and cross‑regional collaboration.
The annual innovation fair <a href="https://www.hktdc.com/event/innoex/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">InnoEX</a> will once again take place in April, featuring cutting‑edge technologies and global breakthroughs, while helping accelerate technology commercialisation.
InnoEX is the flagship event of the Business of Innovation and Technology Week, a series of tech-related exhibitions, conferences, seminars, roundtables and networking events jointly organised by the Hong Kong SAR Government&rsquo;s Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau and the HKTDC.
In his Budget speech, Mr Chan also noted that next year&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.asianfinancialforum.com/conference/aff/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Asian Financial Forum</a> (AFF), an annual gathering of influential financiers, business leaders and policymakers co-organised by the Hong Kong SAR Government and the HKTDC, will mark its 20th anniversary.
The Council will work closely with the Government to further strengthen AFF&rsquo;s focus on how finance can empower business.
The Global Business Summit, a new signature event, made its debut as part of AFF earlier this year to&nbsp;help the financial sector better serve the real economy and industries with a competitive edge.
